3. Moving around MHC and UMass-Amherst
The Pioneer Valley is a very exciting place to visit. The most important cities are Northampton, home to Smith College, and Amherst, home to UMass-Amherst and Amherst College. These two towns are connected by Route 9. South Hadley is home of MHC, is about 15 miles to the south, following Route 47 from Northampton and Route 116 from Amherst (Hampshire College is located in the way between Amherst and South Hadley).
On Friday, a bus will take participants to MHC and back to the Hotel. This bus will pick you up in the morning (leaves at 7:45 AM from the Campus Center Circle) and will bring you next to the conference site in MHC, at the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum. A bus will also return you to the Hotel UMass (it will pick you up at 5:30 PM from the Mt Holyoke College Art Museum). Before arriving at the Hotel the bus will make a stop in downtown Amherst, for those planning to have dinner in town. To go back to the hotel from downtown Amherst, you may walk (30 min), take the PVTA bus Route 38 (which will drop off you at the Haigis Mall, see below) or call a taxi: Funky Cab - 413-586-6666; Go Green Cab - 413-586-0707; Taxi Express - 413-977-0769).
On Saturday evening,there will be a shuttle that will take participants to the Lord Jeffery Inn, where the banquet will be held. The shuttle will begin picking up passengers at 5:15 PM and will be running until everyone is brought to the Lord Jeffery Inn. Attendees can also walk to the Inn; it is a nice 30-minute walk between sites.
4. Pioneer Valley Transportation Service (PVTA)
On Friday, if you miss the bus, prefer to go to the conference late, or leave early, there are PVTA buses running all day long between UMass-Amherst and MHC. You should take the Route 38 bus, which leaves from UMass's Haigis Hall (a five-minute walk from the hotel). Here is a link to the schedule and here is a link to the bus route map.
